The Ones Below review – elegantly nasty middle-class drama 4 / 5 stars 4 out of 5 stars. Two neighbouring couples, both expecting a baby, go to war in this stylish psychological thriller. David Farr’s The Ones Below (2015) has much in common with recent parent-horror treasures like The Babadook (Jennifer Kent, 2014) and Goodnight Mommy (Severin Fiala and Veronica Franz, 2014). While viewing each one, I spent much of my time thinking: “This film is doing a great job making parenting look like a terrifying nightmare.” The Ones Below tries to penetrate the psyche of a niche target audience and ultimately baffles itself in the attempt to provoke any agitation or signs of anxiety. Its beautifully lit with spices of strong buildup to begin but indeed is disheartening to follow through with its downward trajectory coming to close with horrendous, creaky and an abrupt climax.
